Paavo Tynell—often called “the man who illuminated Finland”—is one of the defining figures of 20th-century industrial design, celebrated for lighting that pairs warm atmosphere with exquisite metalwork. Two classic 1950s-era pendants, the 1967 and 1972, showcase his signature balance of softness and precision. The 1967 pendant expands on the design language introduced in 1948 for the 1965 pendant, defined by a conical canvas shade that casts a warm, ambient glow, elevated by refined brass hardware for a subtle, premium expression. The 1972 pendant translates the same timeless sensibility into natural material, featuring a conical bamboo shade crafted by master artisans—hand-sewn bamboo slats formed into a pleated mat and fastened to a wire frame with a linen liner between—directing light downward while creating a diffuse halo around and above the shade as light filters through the bamboo. In both designs, a fabric diffuser beneath the bulb gently modulates the light, while a decorative brass flourish adds character and subtly shapes the lamp’s luminous play.
